Union Gallery is pleased to present Annie Morris, curated by William Gustafsson.
Annie Morris' latest project expands across both the exhibition spaces and features work in a variety of mediums and centres around her love of oil on paper.
For Morris drawing is a ’portal to creativity, freedom of line and the start of an idea’. Bringing together a range of Morris’ creative output, the exhibition shows her free flowing rhythmic style.
Referencing personal history and different recurrent motives, Morris’ work forges immediacy through a blend of figuration and abstraction. These works blend anthropomorphic characters and the investigation of line and expressive mark marking.
Movement and pace of the marks can be seen throughout Morris’ practice, in particularly the monumental drawing, which wraps around the main gallery space. Carefully constructed colour combinations built up to fruition which results in exuberant spontaneity.
Morris’ raw gestural drawing practice transforms seamlessly into her tapestries that are filled with transcendental narratives. The painstakingly stitched works maintain the freedom of a sketch. Informed by her interdisciplinary practice, Morris’ further challenges drawing in her sculpture, Flower Women, bringing her vivid line to life as if pulled from the paper.
Morris’ masterfully plays with scale in her work, with each independently holding their own energy. For the first time, Morris’ is exhibiting her books delicately placed in our Showroom space confronting the large work on paper.
