UNION Gallery is pleased to present Susie Green’s Play Time exhibition. Green practice explores the intricate interplay between power dynamics, eroticism, and fantasy. The artist invites the audience to step into a vibrant realm where characters energetically cavort, straddle, and dominate, igniting a playful yet profound examination of autonomy, independence and identity.
Throughout Play Time, Green explores the theme of control, how it reveals itself physically and psychologically. The characters in her paintings engage in charismatic role play, with complex power dynamics illustrated through their contrasting positions of dominance and submission. The artist’s characters are depicted as female protagonists — abstracted self-portraits —echoing Green’s personal intrigue.
Green's works challenges motifs and scenarios associated with fetish wear and kink with a soft-edged, painterly approach. The harmonious blending of bold yet fluid forms and colours imparts a dreamlike quality to her paintings, blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination, allowing the viewer’s mind to roam freely through a landscape of desire.
This juxtaposition creates a compelling interplay between the boldness of the subject matter and the lightness of her execution, emphasizing the playful tension in her work. With each action, Green invites contemplation on how eroticism can be both assertive and fragile.
Susie Green celebrates the complexities of self-expression, power, and playfulness. Her figures encapsulate the intricacies of human desire and identity, finding liberation within the confines of her canvases. Green invites viewers to embark on an enriching exploration of fantasy and autonomy, celebrating the exuberant complexity of the human experience through the lens of eroticism in art.
